Winter Driving Tips in Ohio

If you have lived in Ohio for a year, you know that the winters here are brutal, and driving in a snow or ice storm is serious business. But with a bit of advance planning and some extra caution, navigating northern Ohio's roadways can be a bit safer. The best piece of winter driving advice is to stay home. However, hibernating for the winter months is not an option for many commuters. Remember to drive well below the posted speed limit and leave plenty of room between vehicles. If you want to learn more about driving in an Ohio winter, keep reading.

Know Weather Before Heading Out

The most important piece of advice would be to know the weather forecast and conditions outside, also keep in mind that just because it is sunny at your house doesn't mean there couldn't be a blizzard at your destination. Thanks to Lake Erie, there can be a blinding snow squall in one spot and sunshine just a mere few miles away. The Ohio Department of Transportation has weather sensors and cameras up for just this reason. These sensors and cameras are on many of the region's busiest roadways that you can check for free. They send real-time data to the Ohio Department of Transportation and even motorists to prepare for what the road conditions are really like and whether there is an accident or backup. You can see this information at https://ohgo.com/. Here, you will find constantly updated traffic flow and alerts of slow traffic and emergency road closures.

Leave A Little Later

If possible, consider postponing your departure to allow the plow trucks a chance to catch up or even for the snow to move on. Would you rather be suck in traffic or be home sipping coffee. If this is not an option, always be sure to clear all of the snow and ice off your car headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. Believe it or not, you can get a ticket for not properly clearing the snow off of your vehicle in Ohio. Also, be sure all your tires are properly inflated and that you have enough gas and windshield washer fluid.

Take It Slow

If you are out in a storm, remember it's not a race, and even your four-wheel-drive vehicle will slide on a large patch of black ice. Keep in mind that the faster you drive, the longer it takes to stop. It is also suggested to break early and slowly and never slam on your brakes if possible. If you have anti-lock brakes, push the brakes, and don't let up if your vehicle does not have anti-lock brakes, you should pump the brakes to help maintain control of the car. If you see brake lights ahead, it's best to start slowing down with plenty of time to spare. It is never a good idea to use your cruise control in the snow and ice. Avoid sudden abrupt turns or maneuvers when entering or exiting the highway.

Be Prepared

If we can learn anything from those poor souls who ended up trapped on Interstate 76 a few years back after massive amounts of snow and accidents left people stuck in their cars for hours, it is to be prepared. The Ohio Department of Transportation suggests motorists put together emergency kits to keep in their vehicles. This kit should include a battery-powered radio, flashlight with extra batteries, blanket, battery jump pack, emergency flares, extra windshield washer fluid, sand to help with tire traction, water, non-perishable food, a First-aid kit, battery-operated cell phone charger.
