Summer is here and school is out! This means more time in the car with your kids to and from activities, road trips, and more! If you’re looking to avoid hearing “are we there yet?” or “I have to go to the bathroom again!” 100 times before you reach your destination and keep their technology time to a minimum, check out these helpful tips we have compiled!
Stock your phone or iPod with kid-friendly audiobooks! If your kids love story time at night, they are going to love listening to engaging stories on the road that will let their imaginations run wild. You can also download kid friendly podcasts that tell short stories or teach them something new! Bonus: find books or podcasts about where you are going and what you are going to be doing/seeing to get them excited!
Play the classic road trips games! Learning the alphabet? Start having your kid's spot letters on road signs and other vehicles until they have collected A through Z! Love a little family competition? See who can collect all the letters first! Get’s really tricky around J, Q, and Z! You can also play road trip bingo! Create a list of common things you see on the road like police cars, stop signs, etc and keep track of how many every sees! Other games include the License Plate game -- see who can spot the most license plates from other states or the Car Counting game -- who can spot 10 of a certain vehicle first!
Pack fun work and puzzle books! Summer means a break from school but you don’t want them to stop learning or forget what they just learned last year. Find workbooks that pertain to their previous grade and the upcoming grade so they can retain what they have learned and challenge themselves! Coloring and activity books full of mazes and puzzles can keep kids entertained for hours! Pack crayons and colored pencils rather than markers so you can keep your car clean.
Keep a surprise bag of toys handy. If you have run out of audiobooks, puzzles, games, and nap time has come and gone, whip out a new toy and reignite the fun! Grabbing a few toys from the dollar section at your local stores make it's easy to have toys they have never seen on hand without breaking the bank!
Turn your vehicle into a movie theater on wheels! Whether you have a built-in rear-seat entertainment system or are bringing along a portable DVD player, you can make the trip go by a lot faster with a movie while still keeping technology time limited. Pick out the movies ahead of time so the kids aren’t fighting over what they are watching! This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to movies that they have never seen before or movies from your childhood to keep their attention!
