The village, incorporated in 1849, was named after a land agent, Judson Canfield. Students in grades 5 through 8 attend school at the Canfield Village Middle School which is the oldest school building in the city, built in 1903. The city occupies a total area of 4.61 miles of which 0.03 is water and 4.58 is land.
