2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vs. Ford Explorer

Are you in the market for a new SUV? Then there are only two options you need to consider! The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is new to the Jeep lineup this year, and its builds on the Grand Cherokee's legacy with some solid engine options, tons of advanced features, and a solid off-road prowess. Meanwhile, the Ford Explorer counters this with some interesting tech and engine options in its own right. There is a lot to consider when you're buying a new SUV, which is why we are going to compare both of these SUVs engines and features to see which one comes out on top!

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Power & Handling

With the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Jeep fans have a lot to be excited about. It comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that pumps out an amazing 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a highly responsive eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is a strong option for towing as it can haul up to 6,200 pounds. Would you like a little more power? Then we highly recommend upgrading to the 5.7-liter V8 that pounds the pavement with 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque which also comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. You can also haul around a massive 7,200 pounds, which is tops in the class. Four-wheel-drive is also available.

2021 Ford Explorer Power & Handling

Two engine options are also available for the Ford Explorer. Standard is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that comes with a solid 303 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. There is a touch more power with the ST trim as it comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 which adds a little more horsepower and torque. Both engines pair with an automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive, but all-wheel-drive is available if you choose. There is a lot to like about the Ford Explorer power numbers, but we are disappointed with the lack of four-wheel-drive, which is leaps and bounds better than all-wheel-drive.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Features & Design

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is just as technologically advanced as it is powerful as there are plenty of available features. It comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen that will align nicely across the instrument panel and mixes in a digital gauge cluster and a touchscreen radio. You also get sharp LED lighting for some spectacular ambiance, driver and front passenger seat massage, personalized climate zones, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. In addition, the Grand Cherokee L comes with a ton of advanced safety systems that are sure to keep you driving with confidence; these include Forward Collision, Active Lane Management, Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Path, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go. You even get some advanced safety systems, such as an L2 driver-assist system with hands-on automated driving, along with 360-degree surround view and night vision.

2021 Ford Explorer Features & Design

With the Ford Explorer, there are several available trim levels, and you get some good features. Starting things out is the base trim with a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLT builds on this nicely with roof rails, keyless ignition/entry, heated front seats, and second-row USB ports. More luxury items are available for the Limited trim as it comes with interior ambient lighting, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and a 12-speaker audio system. Higher trims round things out with paddle shifters, sport front seats, an automated parking system, adaptive headlights, a digital gauge cluster display, and a Class 3 Trailer Tow package.

Conclusion:

While there are merits to both of these premium SUVs, we will give the victory to the Grand Cherokee L! The Grand Cherokee L's engines are impressive, and you have the option of four-wheel-drive, which is better than the all-wheel-drive that the Explorer offers. We also like the advanced safety features that the Grand Cherokee L has some advanced safety features that the Explorer doesn't have.
