2019 Ram ProMaster vs 2019 Ford Transit near Boardman, OH

Cargo Vans are a staple in today’s modern-day workforce, bringing hard-working people and their tools and cargo reliably to where the job takes them. With 2019, we’ve seen great innovations and the capabilities of these modern-day work vehicles, having higher roof heights and better powertrains to help get the job done. The 2019 Ram ProMaster and 2019 Ford Transit are two upstanding work vans that caught our eye on the market. Continue to read on to find out which is our best pick as we dive deeper into the features and powertrains these models offer.

2019 Ram ProMaster Power & Handling

In order to fuel the ProMaster’s solid storage capacity, Ram makes certain to include a reliable powertrain to help get the job done. Within the 2019 ProMaster, you will find a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that clocks at 280 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. We were impressed by the ProMaster’s ability to maneuver in tight situations with a full turn diameter of only 42 feet, which is an astounding figure for work-vans and vehicles this size in general. This overall powertrain system gives the ProMaster the capability to get the job done, with the total cargo capacity of up to 4,680 pounds.

2019 Ford Transit Power & Handling

Ford brings a few different engine types to the table in order to help bring the Transit to the road. Starting at the base powertrain we see a 3.7-liter V6 engine, similar to the one featured in the ProMaster; however, this powertrain doesn’t quite measure up in performance compared to what Ram has brought to the 2019 ProMaster. The Ford’s V6 here clocks in at both lower overall horsepower as well as fuel economy. Ford does offer alternative engines at higher trim levels but requires you to pay more to be able to match the performance we’d hoped for in the design. The 2019 Transit handles decently but doesn’t maneuver or control as well as the ProMaster, having a significantly larger turn diameter compared to its competitor here.

2019 Ram ProMaster Features & Design

Work vans are built and configured in order to be efficient transporters of the goods you need to get the job done. Ram understands how important having easy access to your cargo is with minimal strain going in and out; with this in mind, the ProMaster has an impressive low step-in height rated best-in-class at only 21.5 inches. The rest of the infrastructure is solid offering large storage capacity and tow rating as well as a solid list of features throughout the trim levels. Within the 2019 ProMaster, we see features coming standard at the base 1500 trim level such as split-opening doors in the rear, 16-inch metal wheels, adjustable mirrors, remote van entry, standard air conditioning unit, telescoping steering wheel, handy cargo lights, and cargo tie-down rings located throughout the cargo area. Ram brings in technology including a 5-inch display including radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and Uconnect 3 with voice command activation. The 2500 trim level has an increased total payload rating of 4,230 pounds with a 136-inch wheelbase and low roof configuration. The final trim available is the ProMaster 3500 which introduces a high roof variant for more storage capability also boasting a best-in-class payload capacity of 4,680 pounds.

2019 Ford Transit Features & Design

Ford brings a decent customizable work van to the market with its 2019 Transit and offers a slew of reasonable features. You will find standard features in the Transit such as air conditioning, 16-inch wheels, cargo tie-down rings, and more that match what the ProMaster has in store. The Transit does miss out on a few features that we liked seeing in the ProMaster, including adaptive headlights, powered windows, and others. Taking a look at the overall capability and convenience of the Transit, we see a pretty decent cargo volume and capacity, but the ProMaster has it beaten; the Transit doesn’t show as much cargo volume as its competitor nor the capability to haul as heavy of a payload capacity either. The larger chassis on the Transit causes it to accelerate slower and can be tricky to access and handle in tight parking and driving segments.

Conclusions

The customizability and performance of the 2019 Ram ProMaster and 2019 Ford Transit put them at the top of the market of work vans. We were impressed by both vans in this comparison; the Transit offered nice customizability and base features, but the ProMaster just offered more and has an overall stronger core body giving it higher maneuverability and cargo capacity. The powertrain offered with the ProMaster is a highlight for us, we were impressed with the ability to pull large loads of cargo while not sacrificing performance and convenience while the Ford Transit requires you to spend more money to be able to match this performance level. Overall we have to give it to the 2019 ProMaster as the top pick here, with its excellent powertrain, maneuverability, and ability to reliably help you get the job done.
